Locals complete marathon and raise money for breast cancer cause
Mary Berglund and Tracy Murtha participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, June 28 and 29 in Summit County, Colo. They walked the 26 mile marathon in one day and were joined by 1,500 walkers, 147 of whom were breast cancer survivors. Approximately 900 of the 1,500 completed the entire marathon.
Together Mary and Tracy raised nearly $4,000 in donations. The Summit County Avon Walk raised $3.3 million for the Avon Foundation. That amount is $1 million more than was raised in Colorado during the last Avon Walk, and is a new record for walks held in Colorado.
“All we did was make the walk and raise awareness for breast cancer. It was all of our friends, family and community that did the work by contributing to the foundation. On behalf of ourselves and of all the untold women and men that will be helped by the funding that the foundation disburses, we thank you for caring enough to contribute,” said Tracy.
The Avon Foundation is a 501(c)3 Public Charity. The funds raised are awarded to local, regional and national breast cancer organizations to support five areas of the breast cancer cause. These include awareness and education, screening and diagnosis, access to treatment, support services, and scientific research, all with a focus on the medically underserved.
