Angel Fire Fire Chief John Murtagh confirmed the State Fire Marshal will be investigating a fire that consumed an abandoned structure in Angel Fire Saturday morning (Aug. 26).

“We had a structure fire north of West Ridge Road and West of Highway 434 [near Monte Verde RV Park and Campground],” Murtagh said. “It was an abandoned property so when we arrived it was fully involved and extended into the trees and surrounding brush. Personnel from Angel Fire, Moreno Valley, Eagle Nest and Rio Fernando responded we had it under control pretty quickly. We spent the next few hours performing overhaul. We go through everything and make sure everything is extinguished.

“The origin of the fire is suspicious in nature. No lightning, no utilities on the property. There’s nothing up there. This property had been condemned last month by law enforcement so no one was supposed to be up there. We called the [State Fire Marshal’s Office] to come and investigate. I would imagine all his evidence was completely destroyed. That could take weeks or months to complete.”
