High Mountain Half Marathon and 5K returns to Red River

Runners who like a challenge — a big one — will appreciate the killer ups and downs offered by the Red River High Mountain Half Marathon Saturday (Aug. 4) in Red River.

The 13.1 mile race begins at Brandenburg Park in town (8,750 feet) and climbs over 700 feet with a turnaround point at just above 9,400 feet elevation.

The course follows the Red River into the area’s Upper Valley and the runner is surrounded by high mountain peaks. The half and the 5K are both out and back courses with the challenging part the first half, so at the turn around you will have an almost totally downhill run on the return. Both races start promptly at 9 a.m. on Saturday. An award ceremony follows at 2 p.m. and will include plenty of food and fun, as well as a silent auction and raffle.
