Eagle Nest Dam Centennial celebration kicks off June 30

Tour of the Eagle Nest Dam (Chronicle file photo)
June 30 is the 100th Anniversary of Eagle Nest Dam and the community is celebrating with special events June 30 to July 8.

Built by Frank and Charles Springer, Eagle Nest Dam and Lake is a story of our true western heritage. Early in the 20th century, Frank and”Charlie” saw the need to provide a consistent supply of water not only for the surrounding ranches and farms but also for mining and irrigation projects for the surrounding communities.

What better way than to corral the water from snowmelt that flowed for eons unchecked out of Moreno Valley that caused periodic disastrous floods? In 1906, the Springers first made application to the Territorial Engineer to build a dam; the approval of which took 10 years.

Construction on the dam finally started in 1916, and was financed entirely by Frank, with Charles in charge of the project. Eagle Nest Dam was completed June 30, 1918, and was the largest privately built dam in the United States at that time.
