Get ready for a whole lot of climbing

High Mountain Half Marathon and 5K returns to Red River

With a 700-foot climb from 8,750 feet to a turn-around point of a little over 9,400 feet above sea level, the Red River High Mountain Half Marathon is “for the athlete who likes a challenge.” This bit of understatement comes courtesy of the Red River Chamber of Commerce’s website but anyone who has every run the course knows some of these hills can be killer.

The race weekend kicks off Friday (May 19) 4 – 6 p.m. with a Pre-race reception at Bull O’ The Woods Saloon. Runners can pick up race packets during the reception and at Brandenburg Park on race morning Saturday (May 20) 7 – 8:30 a.m. at the Red River Chamber of Commerce in the Conference Center on River Street (behind Brandenburg Park).

The half marathon and 5K races start promptly at 9 a.m. on Jacks & Sixes next to the park. Runners should dress in layers since the day may start quite cold and warm up quickly.

Races are followed by a 2: p.m. awards ceremony, silent auction, raffle and reception with a taco bar at Bull O’ The Woods Saloon.

For the half marathon, awards will be presented to: Overall male and female winners (with a $100 cash purse).
