SPRINGER — The Cimarron Lady Rams and Rams both lost the opening game of the annual Cowbell Basketball Tournament on Tuesday (Dec. 8).
In the third encounter of the young season, the Lady Panthers took advantage of a foul-plagued Lady Rams squad to advance with a 37-28 win
The first period was extremely hard fought and close, as Peñasco eked out a 5-4 advantage in the first, then added an 11-10 advantage in the second quarter to take a 16-14 lead at intermission.
Peñasco opened the lead with an 11-5 advantage in the third period to lead 27-19 at the three-quarter mark. The game remained in doubt until the final minutes of the final period when the Lady Panthers scored three unanswered baskets to win the fourth period 10-9 and the game 37-28.
Reina Arguello paced the Lady Rams with 10 points, with Mariah Vanderli adding 7 points, Angel Gonzales 5 points, Zoe Salazar 3 points and Gentry Haukebo 2 points.
“We got in foul trouble early and we had to sit Mariah (Vanderli) down early in the first period, that hurt our inside game,” said Lady Ram coach Patricia LeDoux. “We had too many fouls and too many turnovers—we’ll get better. We have to put this game behind us and look to improve during the tournament.”
Raton Tigers 60, Cimarron Rams 50
The Raton Tigers used a 26-14 advantage in the third period to break open a physical game that was close in the first half. The Tigers took an 18-12 lead in the first period, but the Rams fought back to outscore Raton 8-7 to cut the Raton lead to 25-20 at halftime.
Raton outscored the Rams 26-14 in the crucial third quarter to take a 51-34 lead at the three-quarter mark. Cimarron made a furious comeback in the fourth cutting the margin to 12 points, but ran out of gas. The Tigers outscored the Rams 18-13 to win the contest 69-50.
The Rams got solid scoring from Austin Luksich with 13 points, Joseph Serna 12 points, Thomas Jeffers 12 points, Dominik Ickes 11 points and Matthew Dean with 2 points.
The Rams had a bad spell in the third period, but showed a lot of heart and continued to battle until the final buzzer in an extremely physical game.
The Rams and Lady Rams will both be back in action in the consolation round of the Cowbell Tournament on Thursday (Dec. 10). The Rams hit the court against the loser of the Springer-Mosquero contest at 5:30 p.m..
