The Cimarron Lady Rams will open the 2015 volleyball campaign on Tuesday night in the friendly confines of the CHS gymnasium.
Coach Alberta Martinez and assistant Amber Achuleta greeted 16 Lady Rams that make up the varsity and junior varsity teams.
“It’s going to be very interesting we have a diverse mix of athletes from seniors to eighth-graders that will make up our varsity and JV teams,” said Martinez.
“A lot of the kids are pretty even and we’ll use the early season to set the team.”
The Lady Rams will have only two seniors on the squad in captains Mariah Martinez and Alyssa Carrillo. Martinez is an outside hitter and defensive specialist, while Carrillo will play the middle blocker position.
Juniors include setter Jaylyn Ratliff and Marcella Fuentes, while he sophomores include Reina Arguello (outside hitter and defensive specialist), Shaylee Rinde (defensive specialist), Samantha Ogata (middle blocker) and Ariana Gasparlin (defensive specialist). Freshmen include Mary Ickes (setter and middle hitter), McKenzie Gruver (setter and defensive specialist), Jesslynn Selph (hitter and defensive specialist), Alyssa Sanchez, and Kaitlyn Jeide. Eighth-graders consist of Zoe Salazar (outside hitter), Alexis Martinez and Elise Hicks.
The Lady Rams will play in District 5A that consist of Cimarron, Des Moines, Maxwell, Springer and Wagon Mound in a round robin format. Cimarron will also play in the Maxwell tournament and in the annual Anna Archuleta Invtational at home.
The Lady Rams will host Santa Fe’s Monte del Sol Lady Dragons on Tuesday, September 1 at 6:00 p.m., then will travel to Maxwell over the weekend to compete in the Maxwell Tournament on Friday (Sept. 4) and Saturday (Sept. 5).
“We’re excited to get started to see where we’re at and to see where we need to work on,” said Martinez. “We hope to see a good crowd in our home opener, the kids have been working hard.”
