Obituary: John Henry Brandenburg

John Henry Brandenburg, 82, of Taos and Red River died Tuesday (Oct. 9). He was born April 11, 1921, in Taos to Jack and Lottie Brandenburg. He went to school in Eagle Nest, Red River and Costilla. He was a member of the Elks, Kiwanas, Knights of Columbus, Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He owned and operated Siesta Lodge and Johnny’s Store in Red River, he was also co-owner of Arthur/Brandenburg Insurance Agency in Raton until he moved to Taos and started Brandenburg Agency.

As a tail gunner in World War II, he was shot down over Bremen, Germany, and spent 19 months as prisoner of war in Stalag 17B.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lottie Brandenburg; and sister, Aileen Campbell (D.A.). He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rosemary Brandenburg; children, Kathleen A. Vukonich (Michael) of Raton, John D. Brandenburg (A. Renay) of Red River, H. Rosemary “Cokie” Dickinson (Rodney) of Clovis, and Pamela A. Kite (Cecil) of Eagle Nest; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Private family services and interment will be held in Red River. A public gathering and meal to celebrate the life of Mr. Brandenburg will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Red River Community House. Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home.
