State Police arrest Peñasco man for sexual assault of a minor 

On Oct. 1, the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Department requested that the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau take over a criminal investigation involving allegations that James Brown (43) of Peñasco had sexually assaulted a 15-year-old female on numerous occasions since 2016.
 
A New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agent was assigned the case. Evidence was obtained that Mr. Brown had sexually assaulted the 15-year old victim at least 30 different times since March 2016. Brown was arrested on Oct. 3, in Peñasco and charged with the following crimes: Criminal Sexual Penetration in the First Degree (three counts); Kidnapping; and Assault with Intent to Commit a Violent Felony. Mr. Brown was booked into the Taos Detention Center.
