RATON — The Cimarron Rams and Lady Rams took home the 2015 Cowbell consolation titles, albeit in different ways, on Saturday (Dec. 12).
The Ram boys downed Des Moines 69-38, while the Lady Rams lost to Des Moines 50-44 in the Raton High gymnasium. The Lady Rams were to play the West Las Vegas junior varsity, but the Lady Dons were unable to compete. Des Moines, which lost the 7th place game, volunteered to substitute in their place and were a surprise winner.
Cimarron was awarded the consolation trophy since WLV defaulted.
Cimarron 69, Des Moines 38
The Rams jumped out to a 14-11 first period lead, then added a 16-10 advantage to take a 30-21 lead at intermission. Cimarron did not let up with a 17-10 third period advantage to push the lead to 47-31 at the third quarter buzzer. The Rams continued their onslaught with a 22-7 fourth period to win 22-7.
The Rams were not at full strength as starters, Austin Luksich and Dominik Ickes, did not see action.
Thomas Jeffers paced the Ram attack with 21 points, while Dylan Friedt added 16 points for game highs. Matt Dean added 10 points, Joe Serna 8 points, Chris Coca 6 points, Jacob Garcia 5 points, and Austin Vargas 4 points.
Des Moines 50, Cimarron 44
Des Moines started hot and ran to a 16-9 advantage in the first period, only to see Cimarron batte back to a 16-16 deadlock in the second period. The Lady Demons took a 32-25 lead at intermission.
The Lady Rams continued their comeback with a 9-6 advantage in the third to cut the Lady Demon lead to 38-34 at the three-quarter mark. In the final period, the Lady Demons halted the Lady Ram comeback with a 12-7 advantage to win the game 50-44.
Angel Gonzales paced the Lady Rams with 21 points, while Zoe Salazar and Mariah Vanderli each added 6 points, Reina LeDoux 5 points, Gentry Haukebo 4 points and Maya Salas added one point.
The Rams and Lady Rams will host the Raton Tigers on Friday (Dec. 18) at 5 p.m. at the CHS gymnasium.
