RATON — With an 8-0 win over the Estancia Lady Bears on Friday (April 11), the Lady Tiger softball team is in the midst of a nine game winning streak and are currently 11-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in district play.
The Lady Tigers, coached by Tina Dorrance, have been a successful program in the old Class AAA, but have been dominant in the “new” Class AAA.
The Lady Tigers compete in District 5/6 AAA which consists of Estancia, Laguna-Acoma, NACA (Native American Community Academy) and Tucumcari.
Raton has been impressive and has rolled over Santa Rosa (currently playing as an independent)15-2, 16-0 and 12-1; Estancia 12-3 and 8-0; and Laguna Acoma 24-5 and 14-1.
The only losses incurred by the Lady Tigers is to the Class AAAA West Las Vegas Lady Dons, however, the Lady Tigers did beat their former District 2AAA foe once during the course of the season.
Raton currently has the second best record in Class A-AAA, only Dexter at 15-1 has a better mark out of the 27 schools listed in the class.
The Lady Tigers are 16 strong and feature a strong pitching staff that include: seniors Caydence Sisneros (Also 2nd base and short stop), Christina Jaramillo (1st base), junior Natasha Archuleta(short stop), freshman Camryn Mileta (outfield) and eighth-graders Alexia Romero (outfield) and Andie Ortega (short stop and catcher).
The rest of the young squad include juniors Mariah Encinias (Center field) and Alycia Hernandez (3rd base and designated hitter); sophomores Montana Trujillo (Left and right field), Sofia Maddalini (2nd base, short stop and outfield) and Heather Sandoval (1st base); freshmen include Briana Marquez (outfield), Halle Medina (3rd base and outfield), Natausha Ortega (2nd base and short stop) and Camryn Stoecker (catcher).
The Lady Tigers played Pecos on Tuesday (April 14) and will travel to Tucumcari to battle the Lady Rattlers in a District 5/6AAA contest on Thursday (April 16) at 4:00 p.m., then travel to Albuquerque on
Saturday (April 18) to play NACA at 2:00 p.m. in another district contest.
